Booze and cars seized as cops crack down on grog running

TERRITORY police have seized two vehicles and a large amount of alcohol destined for remote communities

TWO cars have been seized along with 87 cans of beer and a swag of bottles of spirits and wine, which were destined for remote communities.

On Thursday, August 13 at 6pm cops pulled over a car on the Arnhem Hwy near Jabiru after it was clocked going 186km/h in a 130km zone.

A search of the car revealed two 30 packs of beer, 2 litres of wine, 4 litres of spirits, and four 700ml bottles of spirits.

The 28-year-old male driver was slapped with a notice to appear in Maningrida Local Court on September 1 for drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed, drive at a dangerous speed and manner and bring liquor into alcohol protected area.

The car was seized under provisions of the Liquor Act 2019 yesterday.

In a separate incident, police pulled over a car near Mt Bundy on the Arnhem Hwy at 10pm on Saturday August 15.

Police searched the car and seized a 1.75 litre bottles of spirits, two 700ml bottle of spirits

27 cans of beer and 30.1g of cannabis.

A 29-year-old female passenger was issued a notice to appear in Oenpelli Local Court on September 23 for bringing liquor into an alcohol protected area.

Police seized the car yesterday under the provisions of the Liquor Act 2019.

Northern Division Superintendent Brendan Muldoon said police were committed to reducing the flow of alcohol into remote communities.

“If you attempt to take alcohol into an alcohol protected area, your car may be seized under the Liquor Act 2019,” he said.

“Every time police seize alcohol which is bound for remote communities it significantly decreases the likelihood and impact of domestic and community violence.”
