Nakara woman, 49, dies from injuries after being hit by schoolboy on bicycle

A boy riding a push bike home from school in Darwin’s north has fatally injured a woman who stepped out of her home at the exact wrong moment.

A woman has died after being hit by a boy riding a push bike home from school in Darwin’s north, in what police described as “a tragic accident”.

At 3.15pm on Wednesday, October 30, Northern Territory Police responded to reports of a 12-year-old boy on a bicycle colliding with a 49-year-old woman stepping out from her home on the corner of Goodman St and Rowling St, Nakara.

The woman was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with serious head injuries, and died on Saturday.

“It’s really, really sad,” Assistant Commissioner Matt Hollamby said.

“This lady just stepped out onto the footpath at the very wrong moment, and as a result of the collision, she fell over and hit her head.

“Our thoughts with her family at this point in time.

“The young child that was riding the push bike is also quite devastated by this incident, so our thoughts are with him, also.”

Mr Hollamby said no charges would be laid.

“It’s a tragic accident,” he said. “It’s a child riding home from school on a footpath.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The woman’s death brings the number of lives lost on Northern Territory roads this year to 54, compared with 25 this time last year.

“We’re approaching the Christmas period where historically, we’ve seen an increase in our fatal road crashes,” Mr Hollamby said.

“So please, we just urge everyone to take care on our roads.”
