Two turtles killed, four injured, one missing after break-in at Crocosaurus Cove

A pair of youths under the age of 10 have allegedly broken into Crocosaurus Cove and killed two turtles and injured several others.

NT Police in a statement said the kids allegedly unlawfully entered the Mitchell St business about 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Two turtles were found dead, while four others were injured, with one still missing as at Thursday afternoon.

Strike Force Trident detectives identified the point of entry as having been over a railing from an adjacent venue.

Veterinarians are currently treating the four injured turtles and are expected to make a full recovery after responding well to treatment.

Crocosaurus Cove chief executive Penny Priest said the team was heartbroken to discover the extent of the damage after the devastating incident.

“We are actively cooperating with the Northern Territory Police, who are conducting a thorough investigation into this shocking event,” she said.

“We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has reached out with messages of support and compassion.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time for our team, and your kindness has been a source of comfort.

“At Crocosaurus Cove, we are committed to providing the best possible care for our animals and ensuring the safety of our facility.

“We are taking additional measures to reinforce security and support our staff through this distressing period.

“We will continue to work closely with the authorities and will provide updates as appropriate.”

Police said the alleged offenders were under the age of 10.

Senior Sergeant Dale Motter-Barnard said the alleged behaviour had no place in the Top End community.

“This behaviour is shocking and completely unacceptable,” he said.

“Violence and cruelty in all forms has no place in our community.

“We encourage anyone with information, particularly those with CCTV in the area to contact police on 131 444 or report anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
