Territory police officer Neil Mellon in court after allegedly destroying evidence in a major crash investigation

A high profile Territory police officer has appeared in court for the first time on a slew of charges, including conspiring to destroy evidence in a major helicopter crash.

Acting Senior Sergeant Neil Mellon was arrested on August 25 and was charged with 31 offences, including obtaining benefit by deception and disclosure of confidential information.

The 47-year-old officer had served 27 years with the force at the time of his arrest.

The charges are understood to relate to a helicopter crash in which Outback Wrangler cast member Chris “Willow” Wilson died on February 28.

Helicopter pilot Sebastian Robinson, 28, was also taken to hospital in a critical condition following the crash in West Arnhem Land.

Police allegedly found illegal firearms, prohibited wildlife and fireworks outside of approved period during a search of his home.

Mellon has also been charged with unlawfully access data – gain benefit, failing to meet storage requirements and stealing.

Mellon’s case has been adjourned until October for a plea or mention.

Remote Helicopters Australia director and chief pilot Michael Burbidge was charged earlier this week with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice in relation to the same fatal crash.

Mr Burbidge, 44, was one of four people who flew to the crash scene in the immediate aftermath, and was arrested on Wednesday.

He is also charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, destruction of evidence and providing false statement in a statutory declaration.

He has been bailed to appear in the Darwin Local Court on October 19.
