A motorsports-loving larrikin and an icon of the Hidden Valley Supercars race was allegedly killed by a careless, drug driver, with the courts confirming charges seven months after his death.

Darwin River man Anthony Hobden died at the scene of a two-vehicle crash at 2.30pm, on October 31 after his motorcycle was allegedly struck by another vehicle.

The 56-year-old motorcyclist was driving home from work through the intersection at Chung Wah Tce and Elrundie Ave in Moulden when he collided with the vehicle of 28-year-old Stephanie Akehurst.

Mr Hobden was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other driver was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Seven months after his death, Ms Akehurst was due to face Darwin Local Court charged with careless driving causing death, drug driving and not giving way while turning right at an intersection.

On Tuesday, her defence lawyer Matthew Hubber told judge Theresa Austin the careless driving allegation was “quite an unusual charge, yet quite serious” and could carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

Mr Hubber said despite the lengthy gap between the fatal crash and Ms Akehurst’s first mention appearance, NT Police had yet to fully serve their crash investigation report.

Ms Austin said since Ms Akehurst had organised a lawyer, she was not required to physically come into the courtroom itself to face the brief two-minute hearing.

“I appreciate that she has attended, and she’s outside and you’re fully instructed,” she said.

However, Mr Hobden’s loved ones told the NT News they were disappointed that the 28-year-old was not called before the judge.

Mr Hobden’s partner attended the first mention hearing, with a friend telling the NT News: “She’s is in a world of pain”.

“Her whole world has been ripped away. Anthony was her soulmate and sole provider,” she said.

Mr Hobden was an icon of the Territory’s annual V8 Supercar Hidden Valley race, well-known for his massive and eye-catching flag collection that he would proudly display each year.

Following the 56-year-old’s death, Dave Hobden summarised his brother by his four great loves: “He loved his motorbikes, loved his missus, loved his car racing and he was a passionate Territorian”.

Ms Austin adjourned Ms Akehurst’s matter for a directions hearing on August 18.
