A Toyota Prado has caused significant damage after smashing into an MLA’s office in Darwin.
Fong Lim member Mark Monaghan’s Stuart Park headquarters were rammed by the vehicle at 6.10am on Thursday.
NT Police said the driver was not at the scene when officers arrived.
“Around 6:10am, police received reports of a Toyota Prado that had crashed into a building on the Stuart Highway at the intersection of Westralia Street, Stuart Park,” a spokesman said.
“The driver fled the scene prior to police arrival.
“Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information is urged to make contact on 131 444.”
The front window was completely smashed in and office furniture inside damaged by the crash.
The footpath on the Stuart Hwy location has been sectioned off near the pedestrian crossing and police are on the site.
Mr Monaghan is the 14th Speaker of the NT Legislative Assembly and his electorate of Fong Lim covers the suburbs of Bayview, Coonawarra, Eaton, Hidden Valley, The Narrows, Stuart Park, Winnellie, and Woolner and a portion of Berrimah.
Mr Monaghan described the incident as “unfortunate”.
“This is obviously an unfortunate situation and we are currently working through the exact extent of the damage,” he said.
“Our office remains open and it’s business as usual.”
