One person has died while another has been taken to hospital following a fatal head-on collision between two vehicles on the Arnhem Highway.
The crash took place about 6am on Saturday morning on the Arnhem Highway about 1.5km east of the Lambells Lagoon intersection.
Emergency services declared one of the drivers dead at the scene, while the other was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said Major Crash detectives were investigating the circumstances of the collision between the two utilities.
“The Arnhem Highway remains fully closed as police and firefighters work to extract and recover the deceased,” he said.
Police urge motorists to defer any travel away from the Arnhem Highway for the remainder of the day and avoid the area.
A traffic diversion is expected to be in place from midday, with motorists told they should expect lengthy delays.
Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash or were aware of the movements of those involved to make contact on 131 444 and quote P24154857.
This brings the roads death toll for the Northern Territory to 26 for the year.
The death toll this time last year was 4, and the total number of road deaths in 2023 was 31.
