Every day police officers hear the desperate pleas of Territorian trying to escape violence, with at least 22 violent incidents reported per day last week.
According to the latest NT Police statistics there were 159 reported acts to cause injury in the past week, an average of 22 incidents a day.
On Tuesday, Assistant Commissioner Bruce Porter said this was down from the previous seven day average, with 199 violent acts reported from May 28 to May 22.
Mr Porter said overall there was a slight decrease in the seven-day crime rate, with police called to 4922 incidents from May 29 to June 4.
Mr Porter said this was 186 fewer incidents than the previous week.
He said the latest crime toll included 216 property offences, 159 acts to cause injury, and 250 public order offences.
“It is important to note that crime fluctuates,” Mr Porter said.
“But during the past month police have been actively engaging with other departments and agencies working together for inter-agency approaches to prevent anti social behaviour.”
Mr Porter said one of the biggest issues continued to be alcohol related offending.
“So we’re continually targeting alcohol as we know it is one of the main drivers for any social behaviour and incidents of domestic violence,” he said.
