NT Police investigating after two die in fatal Tanami Highway crash

Police are investigating after two people died in a major crash on a Northern Territory highway.

A crash involving a sedan carrying five people crashed on Tanami Rd, about 20km from the Stuart Hwy intersection about 2.50pm Friday.

NT Police, NT Fire and Rescue Service and St John Ambulance went to the scene where a man and woman were declared dead.

Emergency services took the remaining three passengers to Alice Springs Hospital for treatment.

Police declared a crime scene and have closed the road in both directions.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area for the remainder of Friday night with diversions set up later in the evening.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit will prepare a report for the coroner.

It brings the death toll on Territory roads for 2024 to 34, up from seven this time last year and from 31 for the entirety of 2023.
