A MAN who was self-harming in his cell has been charged by police after allegedly biting and kicking officers.
Derek Smiler appeared in the Darwin Local Court on Thursday facing allegations he attacked officers following a self-harm incident while in custody on July 13.
Chief Judge Elizabeth Morris said Smiler would be referred to a mental health hearing on July 21.
The 51-year-old was not granted bail and was put in remand.
Police alleged the man assaulted police at Palmerston Watch House on Wednesday morning.
Police said he was taken directly from the Royal Darwin Hospital to the watch house at 8.20am, after he was deemed fit for custody.
The NT News understands the hospital decides to deem a patient unfit for custody if they are an acute risk of harm to themselves or the public.
While in the cells the man started self-harming by striking his head on the cell wall, causing him to bleed from a cut.
Police allege that when officers went into the cell, the man bit an officer and kicked another.
He was taken to hospital. Police alleged his injuries were self-inflicted.
Superintendent Peter Malley said a male officer was treated for a hand injury and provided medication, while a female police officer suffered minor pain and discomfort.
Supt. Malley said police would “maintain our professionalism” when charging people over alleged assaults on officers.
“When we have cause to interact with people and bring them into the watch house it is not acceptable that they become punching bags,” he said.
The 51-year-old was charged with assaulting and resisting police, disorderly behaviour in a police station and assaulting an ambulance worker.
