Investigators are calling for witnesses to solve a mystery surrounding a Christmas Eve plane crash in the Territory.

Police and Australian Transport Safety Bureau crash scene investigators are battling through dense bushland to pick through the wreckage of a Cessna 210N, which went missing on December 24.

Police said the plane failed to arrive at Tindal Airport, Katherine after leaving Gove Airport, Nhulunbuy at 8.15am on December 24.

The wreck was found two days later near Bulman, 240km northeast of Katherine.

Police confirmed the 22-year-old male pilot and his 43-year-old female passenger died in the crash.

Senior Sergeant Paul Lawson said police were now looking for anyone who may have seen the light plane in the air before it went down.

Sergeant Lawson said investigators were particularly calling for witnesses who spotted the Cessna 210N in the two hours between takeoff and 10.30am on December 24.

He said the light plane would have been travelling between Nhulunbuy and 50km north of Bulman around that time.

“The public has already provided us with some valuable information and I want to thank those people who have contacted us,” Sergeant Lawson said.

Sergeant Lawson said anyone with information should call 131 444, and quote the reference number 10212740.
