Six people have been arrested after they allegedly led police on a dangerous car chase spanning more than 75 kilometres.
An NT Police spokesperson said Wadeye officers spotted an allegedly stolen Toyota HiLux being driven dangerously on Thursday.
They alleged the vehicle was being driven towards police which forced them to evade to avoid being struck.
Some time later the group allegedly threatened a person and stole his vehicle, and were then spotted trying to refuel in Daly River.
Police tried to push the group and car out of the community, but the alleged offenders redirected towards Wadeye.
Police said they spotted the vehicle on Dorat Rd and pursued the group to Adelaide River.
“In an effort to intercept the vehicle before it reached Darwin, police established an apprehension plan with Tyre Deflation Devices (TDD) north of Adelaide River,” the spokesperson said.
“The offenders, however, redirected onto the Stuart Highway, prompting police to reposition a TDD location 15km south of Adelaide River, successfully deflating a rear tyre.
“The pursuit intensified as the offenders attempted to ram police vehicles and tailgated a civilian vehicle, placing all nearby at risk.”
The group also threw projectiles such as tools, car parts, claw hammers and a brush cutter blade from the vehicle throughout the chase.
By the time the vehicle came to halt, the car had allegedly travelled more than 75km from the initial TDD point and had popped two more tyres on additional TDDs along the way.
The spokesperson said the efforts of Strike Force Trident and the Dog Operations Unit helped bring the chase to an end.
“In a co-ordinated approach, police officers surrounded the vehicle, preventing any chance of escape.
“With the assistance of patrol dog Boss, all suspects were taken into custody without further incident.
“Officers exercised significant restraint, bringing this extremely volatile situation to a safe and controlled conclusion.”
The spokesperson said three teens – aged 13, 15, and 15 – along with three adults – aged 18, 19, and 21 – remain in custody and would be charged on Friday.
