NT Police allegedly seize 480g of cannabis, charge five men in Central Desert

Police have seized what they say is ‘trafficable’ quantities of drugs destined for remote communities in the latest crackdown on illicit substances. Read who has been charged.

A police bust on a major Alice Springs road has allegedly seized 480g of cannabis inbound for a remote community.

Northern Territory Police have issued five men with Notices to Appear following the alleged Central Desert drug bust on Tanami Rd.

Acting Superintendent Daniel Bell said police stopped two vehicles attempting to travel into a remote community, northwest of Alice Springs, on Friday October 28.

Superintendent Bell said four men were in the first alleged drug-running vehicle, where police allegedly found 270g of cannabis and other drug paraphernalia.

Superintendent Bell alleged a second vehicle was stopped moments after the first bust.

Two adults and three children were in the vehicle allegedly used to smuggle 210g of cannabis and a large number of small clip seal bags that were unused.

A 33-year-old man was charged with possessing a trafficable quantity and supplying a dangerous drug in an Indigenous community.

“The carriage of illicit substances into any community, but more particularly remote communities in the Northern Territory is an extremely serious offence,” Superintendent Bell said.

“Police actively target these behaviours and will prosecute all persons detected engaging in this unlawful and harmful activity.”

All five men will appear in court at a later date.
