Hundreds brawl in remote town fight frenzy

Up to 300 people have been fighting on the streets of Wadeye with homemade weapons as police continue to battle ongoing disturbances and dangerous driving in the troubled town.

Police confirmed that since Saturday, multiple people have been injured in the chaos which culminated about 3am on Monday when a 19 year-old man was allegedly struck with an arrow in the upper leg and conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital where he remains receiving treatment.

On Saturday, a 26 year-old man was allegedly struck with a window louvre and taken for medical attention at the local clinic.

“The behaviour police have been responding to over the past two months remains completely unacceptable,” she said.

“There is no excuse for the large-scale fighting and criminal damage that is currently occurring within the community, as well as the continuous assaults on police members and damage to police assets.”

“NT Police are committed to maintaining community safety and to help facilitate solutions to this violence,” she said.

“We will continue to work with Elders, Traditional Owners, other government agencies and the community itself as these incidents require everyone to step up, take responsibility and start implementing solutions.”
