Police have alleged a young mum was choked, restrained and forced to hide in dark bushland as a man tried to run her down with his vehicle.
NT Police said she finally returned home, the 20-year-old woman allegedly found her two-year-old daughter missing.
On Monday her 21-year-old alleged attacker was granted bail by Darwin Local Court.
Lachlan Tyler appeared before Judge Tanya Fong Lim charged with aggravated assault, deprivation of personal liberty, recklessly endangering serious harm, trespassing, resisting and assaulting police and escaping from lawful custody.
Police have alleged the Tyler was arguing with the woman while they drove down Girraween Rd in the early hours of Friday, October 21.
The young woman asked Tyler to stop.
Police alleged as she tried to leave the car the man grabbed her by the throat and restrained her in the vehicle.
It will be alleged the young woman escaped, only to be chased down and tackled by Tyler.
The woman allegedly pushed him off and hid in darkened bushland.
Police allege Tyler then hopped in his vehicle and repeatedly tried to run her down.
The young woman was eventually able to alert a nearby resident, who called police.
Police have alleged that when she returned home, the building had been broken into and her toddler was missing.
Tyler was allegedly spotted by police in his vehicle with the girl.
As police attempted to arrest him, Tyler allegedly sped off causing an officer to be dragged by his arm for a short distance down the street.
Police alleged the officer was able to free himself and suffered minor injuries.
Tyler allegedly returned to the woman’s home and dropped off the child before fleeing the scene.
He was arrested without incident in Winnellie on Sunday.
Tyler’s barrister Christina White said the 21-year-old had participated in a record of interview with police and was likely to plead to some of the charges.
“But with significant negotiation on the charges,” Mr White said.
She said her client had no history of violent criminal offences, and made an application for bail so he could live with his mother in Katherine.
Prosecutor Brianna Craggs said there were fears for the victim’s safety if Tyler was released.
Ms Craggs said there were also doubts that Tyler would return to court, given the escape custody and police assault charges.
Ms Fong Lim asked the young man to make a “$1000 promise to the court”, to leave his alleged victim alone and to comply with his bail conditions.
“You are not to contact, directly or indirectly (the woman),” she said.
“That includes social media, through third persons, or phone or anything like that. No contact at all.”
Tyler was not required to attend his next court directions hearing on November 28.
