A man accused of barging into a woman’s home and threatening to gun her down managed to evade court security, jumping over the barrier and running down the street.
It took six guards to escort Ezra Austral back to the Darwin Local Court cells after the 27-year-old managed to push past G4S staff while being escorted into the cells on Thursday afternoon.
The 27-year-old was facing the court for a first mention on serious domestic violence related offences.
NT Police alleged that on Saturday Mr Austral barged into a home, demanding money from a woman before threatening to shoot and kill her.
The 27-year-old allegedly continued to assault and threaten the woman, demanding she take off her jewellery.
He allegedly returned later that day to continue threatening her.
Four days later, NT Police arrested him in a Leanyer home without incident, despite it being alleged he had a machete and firearm “concealed within his clothing”.
He was charged with aggravated assault, assault with intent to steal, making threats to kill, trespass, going armed in public, possessing a controlled weapon and an unregistered firearm while unlicensed.
“Domestic and family violence has no place in our community, and we appreciate the brave victim-survivors and witnesses who report these incidents to police,” a police spokesman said.
When Mr Austral faced Darwin Local Court judge Alan Woodcock, he asked his lawyer to delay his hearing to ensure his partner could watch from the gallery.
Mr Austral’s lawyer Daniel Wotton said while she was in the court earlier she had stepped out, suggesting Mr Austral’s matter return after lunch.
As G4S Security guards went to unlock the door to get Mr Austral to return to the cells, there was a loud ‘bang’ as he barged past.
Within seconds he had pushed past the door, legged it over the 1.5m tall security screens and run from the courtroom — leaving his lawyer looking shocked and surprised at the bench.
Two members of the court security team apprehended Mr Austral outside the court, holding him until G4S staff arrived.
As G4S security guards carted him back to the court, the young man called out “relax, relax”.
“Oi f—king relax, you need to chill out bro,” he said.
“I’m all right. Chill out.”
The alleged domestic abuser appeared to have run towards a young woman he knew.
She appeared shaken and on the verge of tears after he was taken back to the cells.
His matter was adjourned for a preliminary examination mention on July 23.
