A Darwin Middle School teacher who allegedly assaulted a student, causing them serious harm, has appeared in court for the first time.
Darroch Airlie Robinson, 53, was charged with aggravated assault and unlawfully causing serious harm after the alleged assault on the afternoon of March 19.
He appeared in Darwin Local Court on Tuesday alongside a supporter.
Defence lawyer Natasha Clayton requested an adjournment and a bail variation, both of which were approved.
Mr Robinson will next appear before the court for a directions hearing on May 15.
He declined to comment outside court on his charges.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Education previously said it was aware of the allegations faced by Mr Robinson.
“Violence in any form in our schools is unacceptable,” she said.
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority and we continue to work closely with all our schools to provide a safe learning and work environment.”
Mr Robinson taught English and humanities at Darwin Middle School, according to the school’s Term 1, 2024 list of teacher contacts.
It’s understood Mr Robinson has been employed at Darwin School since at least 2016.
According to Mr Robinson’s social media profiles, he formerly worked at Rosebery Primary School and, prior to becoming a teacher, served in the Royal Australian Air Force, where he attained the rank of corporal.
It’s understood he served in the Middle East from 2010–11 as part of Operation Slipper’s Force Communications Unit Four, a 124-member tri-service unit commanded by RAAF Wing Commander Anthony Houghton.
