A Territory woman allegedly involved in a mid-flight brawl has claimed in court she was trapped with her abuser, who punched through a plane window.

Cindyanne Bara appeared in Darwin Local Court on Thursday appealing to be allowed back on a plan to make the 644km journey home to Groote Eylandt.

The 23-year-old was one of four people arrested after two alleged mid-air brawls on a flight from Cairns to the Territory on April 20.

It will be alleged the chaotic Alliance Airlines flight involved two brawls, one forced turn back, and a broken window.

Australian Federal Police alleged an initial incident led the plane returning to Cairns airport, where another woman was removed from the flight.

She was charged with disorderly behaviour on an aircraft, common assault and failing to comply with safety instructions by cabin crew.

It is alleged the trouble started again when the plane took off a second time.

NT Police said a second disturbance involving three people was reported at 8.30pm.

Bara, along with a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, were arrested shortly after the flight touched down.

Bara was accused of property damage, disorderly behaviour in a public place while intentionally endangering the safety of others and the operations of an aircraft.

However, her defence lawyer Bryce Wilson alleged his client was a victim of violence herself.

“Is it clear that my client was a survivor of domestic violence on that flight,” Mr Wilson said.

He also said there was no evidence she smashed the passenger window.

“The co-accused, the partner, was sitting and punching the window,” Mr Wilson said.

“Logistically it would be quite difficult for my client to be reaching over and causing such damage.”

The 23-year-old was silent as Judge Ben O’Loughlin approved her bail to Alyangula, on the condition she avoid Groote Eylandt Airport unless for a medical emergency or court.

“That will ensure that ground staff, and (airline) staff can feel comfort and safety,” Mr Wilson said.

Mr Wilson said her flight home was booked for Friday, with Mr O’Loughlin clarifying: “So they are letting her get on this plane?”

“They’ve accepted the booking, with all the details,” Mr Wilson replied.

Bara will also be subject to drugs and alcohol testing and was told not to leave the Northern Territory.

Her matter was adjourned to May 9 at the Alyangula Local Court.
