One of the trio allegedly behind a terrifying attack on a young couple at a remote Groote Eylandt campground has briefly faced court in the matter where police say social media app Snapchat played a central role in the alleged violence.

Braydon Mamarika, 18, was not present when his lawyer Erin Morton sought a three week adjournment at the Darwin Local Court on Wednesday morning.

The two brothers also charged over the attack – Mason Butler, 20, and Christian Butler, 18, – were also due to appear but their matters were not heard.

It was alleged Mamarika and the Butlers used Snapchat’s maps feature to locate the victims, invading their campsite after nightfall on April 1.

According to police’s allegations, heard in court, the men were armed with weapons and caused significant damage to the couple’s vehicle before turning on the campers who required treatment at a local clinic for their injuries.

Police also allege that parts of the incident were filmed on Snapchat and will be used as evidence, allegedly recording verbal abuse and threats.

The trio were given 14 charges including damage to property, recklessly endangering causing serious harm, making threats to kill, aggravated assault and deprivation of personal liberty.

While Mamarika was granted bail at his first court appearance, the Butler brothers were initially remanded in custody and had to take their matter to the Supreme Court before being granted bail.

Mamarika will next appear in court on June 28.
