The man accused of bashing in the head of an international student in a violent home invasion will soon face the Supreme Court.
Brendan Kantilla was charged with the murder of Bangladeshi student ‘Sifat’ Md Isfaqur Rahman on May 3, 2023.
The 23-year-old Bangladeshi national was found by his roommates in bed with critical head injuries after waking up to the sound of someone in their yard.
Sifat was taken to the intensive care unit at Royal Darwin Hospital, but died the next day.
Kantilla was arrested near Mr Rahman’s home a short time after the alleged attack, and charged with murder, aggravated burglary and theft.
Seven months after his initial arrest, the 29-year-old appeared in Darwin Local Court for his committal hearing to the Supreme Court.
Chief Judge Elisabeth Morris was told Kantilla had made “certain admissions” when interviewed by police, and this would form the prosecution case.
She heard that there were a number of witness statements.
Kantilla’s lawyer told Ms Morris that the prima facie case had been conceded, and the three charges would be travelling to the Supreme Court.
His case was adjourned to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2024.
