Anthony James Kenny faces court over alleged hit-and-run crash killing a 20-year-old

A 20-year-old Alice Springs man was left on the street with life-threatening injuries for up to 85 minutes following an alleged hit-and-run, a court has heard.

Police have alleged an unlicensed driver hit a young man with his car on a suburban Alice Springs street, before fleeing the scene.

Anthony James Kenny appeared in Alice Springs Local Court on Tuesday for his first appearance over the alleged hit-and-run killing of a 20-year-old on Sunday March 24.

The 31-year-old appeared before Judge Sarah McNamara charged with hit and run driving causing death, breaching bail and driving while unlicensed.

He made no application for bail, and was remanded into custody to return on May 30.

NT Police have alleged that the 20-year-old was found unresponsive at the Larapinta Drive, Aldridge St intersection at 4.15am.

It is believed the alleged crash occurred within a 85 minute window before his body was discovered.

He was taken to Alice Springs Hospital with serious injuries, where he was later declared deceased.

NT Police have also confirmed that a parallel potential death in custody investigation is also underway, as the young man was escorted by police home earlier that night.

It was alleged police were called to Todd St, Alice Springs just before 3am over a disturbance, but no one was charged.

Police said they engaged with the 20-year-old and he was taken back to his home, 85 minutes before his body was discovered on the road.
