An alleged sexual predator, who police say tried to rape a young child after allegedly unlawfully entering a home in Palmerston last week, has faced court for the first time.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in the dock of the Darwin Local Court on Monday wearing a black singlet, grey trousers and thongs.
The 22-year-old is charged with attempted rape, unlawful entry and aggravated assault.
He casually crossed his legs as judge John Neill remanded him in custody shortly before 1pm.
“Because of the nature of those offences and the maximum penalties available, these must be dealt with by committal (to the Supreme Court),” he said.
“There is no bail application today.”
Mr Neill ordered prosecutors to serve the balance of the brief of evidence against the man by January 23 next year and the case will return to court on February 1.
