It was one of the most shocking crimes that stunned the world.
Now, former porn star John Bobbitt has revealed what was rushing through his mind when his ex-wife gruesomely castrated him in 1993.
In a case that had men across the world crossing their legs, Bobbitt has now given another interview about the moment that he’ll never forget.
He has told ABC News in America that he attempted to clear his thoughts when he saw the bloody scene.
“It was a nightmare,” he told the American news outlet in a 20/20 special titled ‘The Bobbitts: Love Hurts’, which is set to air on January 4 in the US.
“I cleared my thoughts, applied pressure.”
It was an incident that his former wife, Lorena Gallo, previously explained wasn’t an act of revenge, but rather, a necessary act to ensure her survival.
She had met the “charming” Bobbitt four years earlier. But when once they’d tied the knot, she claimed he became aggressive, alleging he physically and sexually abused her while also abusing drugs and alcohol.
On the night she “snapped” before fleeing their house in Manassas, Virginia, with $100, her then-husband’s Game Boy and his penis in-hand, a friend Bobbitt’s was staying with them.
Bobbitt told ABC News when he went to alert him of the horrifying incident, he started screaming “as soon as he saw the blood everywhere”.
“I went to wake my friend up to tell him to get me to the hospital,” Bobbitt said.
“He was going crazy.”
Bobbitt explained how when doctors saw the grisly scene, they initially thought it was a case of attempted suicide, which the then 26-year-old previously admitted to thinking was the only answer.
“Walking into the hospital, the (emergency room) doctor is … looking at me, (and said) ‘show me your wrist,’” Bobbitt told ABC News, before adding the doctor’s “jaw dropped” when he revealed where the blood had come form.
Miraculously, police had retrieved his severed appendage after Gallow has tossed it into a field neighbouring a 7-Eleven. Place on iced in a hotdog box, they rushed it to the hospital where it was successfully reattached to its owner after a nine-hour operation.
“It’s normal now,” he said.
“I don’t want to mess with it … it’s been through the wringer.”
The incident landed Bobbitt a short-lived career in porn, landing him lead roles in titles including ‘Frankenpenis’ and ‘John Wayne Bobbitt: Uncut’. He was recruited by Ron Jeremy who would go on to face accusations of sexual assault.
Gallo’s life would take a completely different path.
While Bobbitt would go on to face multiple divorces, domestic violence convictions and theft, Gallo — who had immigrated from Venezuela — went on to live her “American Dream”.
Earlier this year, she told Vanity Fairshe went back to community college where she’d meet her partner David Belliner. The two have now been together for 20 years.
“I didn’t just fall in love with David like I did with John. It was a friendship that grew into love,” she told Vanity Fair.
She now works as an administrative assistant and manicurist to support her father, mother, brother and sister, while also leading the Lorena’s Red Wagon — an advocacy group for domestic violence victims.
THE TRIAL
The pair’s court proceedings gripped America and were even aired by CNN.
Vanity Fairreported that viewers were outraged when then-US President Bill Clinton’s Ukraine nuclear disarmament announcement interrupted the broadcast.
Inside the courthouse — where just beyond the walls vendors spruiked penis-shaped chocolates, and T-shirts labelled ‘LOVE HURTS’ — Gallow would claim she attacked Bobbitt after he drunkenly raped her.
“He jumped on top of me and he started grabbing my arms really tight,” she told ABC News at the time.
“I said, ‘I don’t want to have sex’ … he forced me.”
Gallo faced 20 years in jail, but was ultimately found not guilty but reason of temporary insanity, and instead, spend five weeks at a mental hospital.
In 2016, Bobbitt said he harboured no hard feelings for Gallow.
“I don’t blame Lorena,” he said in ‘Scandal Made Me Famous’.
“We both hurt each other. I wish her the best.”
The sensational eight-day trial was credited for putting domestic violence on America’s conversational agenda.
