APPLE has almost always named its products with an ‘i’ and it’s become one of the company’s defining features. But what does it stand for?
If you believe the letter stands for “internet”, you would be correct.
But things aren’t this simple.
According to Steve Jobs, that’s not the only thing the letter refers to - it actually stands for a lot of other things.
During the launch of the first iMac back in 1998 Steve said the computer was targeted at the “number one use that the consumers say they want to use the computer for”.
“Even though this is a full-blooded Macintosh, we are targeting this for the number one use that consumers tell us they want a computer for, which is to get on the internet, simply, and fast,” he said.
“And that is what this product is targeted for.”
Steve went on to show a slide with a lot of different words beginning with the letter “i”, including internet, individual, instruct, inform and inspire.
“’i’ also means some other things to us,” he explained.
“We are a personal computer company, and although this product is born to network, it also is a beautiful stand-alone product. We are targeting it also for education.
“They want to buy these. And it is perfect for most of the things they do in instruction.”
The company went onto name virtually all of their products with that little “i”, including their software like iTools and hardware such as iPods.
However, more recently it seems as though Apple is trying to move away from the little letter and are making a move towards using the company’s name, as with Apple TV and the Apple Watch.
