It might finally be time to bring out the hat and sunnies, as a warm, record breaking blast is forecast to hit the country.
A strong high-pressure system is set to bring in a wave of warm weather for Central Australia before heading down south, potentially breaking the 15-year record for the hottest seven-day streak.
Sky News meteorologist Alison Osborne said Alice Springs had recorded its warmest morning since April on Monday.
“Alice Springs recorded a minimum temperature of 18.4C this morning – 12.5C above average and the warmest morning since April,” Osborne told SkyNews.com.au.
“From today until at least the end of the weekend, an unusually warm air mass over Central Australia is leading to a rare and potentially record-breaking warm spell. Daytime and night-time temperatures will be significantly warmer than usual.
“Current forecast is for seven days in a row to hit or exceed 30C – which would be the equal longest run for any August since 2009.”
Ms Osborne added that highs of 35C – 12C above average – in Alice Springs were tipped for Friday and Saturday.
The town’s previous warmest August day is 35.2C in 2009.
Coober Pedy in northern South Australia could also break its winter record of 34.3C, as it’s tipped to reach temperatures of 34C on Saturday.
Oodnadatta, which is about 200km north of Coober Pedy, may also narrowly surpass its winter record of 36.5C on Friday and Saturday.
Anti-clockwise winds are forecast to bring the warm weather down south in time for Sunday.
Sydney is tipped to reach highs of 25C on Wednesday and Sunday this week, while Melbourne is expected to hit 22C on Sunday despite showers.
Perth, Adelaide, Hobart and Canberra are all expecting showers throughout the week; however, respective highs of 21C, 25C, 19C and 21C are still forecast.
Brisbane is expected to hit a maximum temperature of 27C on Thursday, while Darwin is expected to reach 35C.
