MELBOURNE batsman Campbell Kellaway kept the City Cyclones’ finals hopes alive with a decisive knock of 62 from 49 balls to help his side to a four-wicket win over Northern Tide in the T20 Strike League.

Coming in at No.4 with the score at 2-24, Kellaway knew he had a job to do, particularly as Cyclones had lost their opening two games.

And do his job Kellaway did, hitting eight fours and a six, to put his side within striking distance of its 148-run target.

It was the Tide which batted first, coming off a 29-run win over Southern Storm, but losing the early wickets of Antum Naqvi and Jason Sangha cost them deeper into the innings.

Opener Matthew Gilkes accelerated, registering 34 from 19 balls, but he fell to a Jack Edwards delivery.

Jayllen Naganayagam (30) and Matt Hammond (20) put up some resistance late in the innings to drag the score out to a competitive 8-147.

Cyclones also lost early wickets with openers Edwards and Dylan Hunter both barely making double figures.

But the arrival of Kellaway settled the side as he was able to put together strong partnerships with Ryan McElduff and Josh Neill.

And though Kellaway was unable to close out the knock, he did enough to set up Neill and Jackson Edmondstone for the win in the final over, with Neill hitting a four to see the score hit 6-151.

“It was good to get a win on the board. All the boys were pretty keen to chase that total down,” Kellaway said.

“It’s a pretty good feeling, much better than losing. We have one game to go and if we win that we will still be a chance to get into finals.

“They got off to a start, but we got some early wickets and so I always felt we were in the game. We were happy to keep them to 150 and backed our batting to do the job.

“We’ve been five per cent off so far, just minor things and we knew that if we had to win ugly we could pull that off.

“There’s plenty of good boys up here, it’s been good fun. I’ve loved every minute of it and it’s going to be disappointing to go home.”

It’s do or die for the City Cyclones who faltered to back-to-back losses in their opening games, but a win here could salvage their series.

Nicholas Larkin has been a standout with the bat for the side hitting 39 runs in the opener and 29 runs against Storm, but will need to fire to get Cyclones their win.

Tide, however, are coming off a strong 29-run win over Southern Storm where Jason Sangha more than stood out with the bat notching 66 runs.
