AUSTRALIAN Boomers Matthew Dellavedova and Andrew Bogut could not will their new NBA teams over the line in their respective season-openers.

Bogut’s Dallas Mavericks battled a double digit gap for most of their clash with the Indiana Pacers, before coming home with a flurry to force overtime. Bogut was on the bench for most of the final term as the Mavs went small, but they missed his defensive presence on a pair of key plays that led to easy buckets for Pacers’ big man Myles Turner (30 points and 16 boards) and shooting guard Monta Ellis (19 points, seven assists, seven rebounds). He sat the entire extra period as Pacers’ star Paul George (25 points) and Turner led them to a 130-121 victory. Bogut had six points, six boards and seven assists in 20 minutes of play. Point guard Deron Williams had 25 points for the Mavs, while Dirk Nowitzki and JJ Barea came up with 22 points each — Barea preferred over Bogut by coach Rick Carlisle during crunch time. In Milwaukee, Dellavedova found more playing time — 29 minutes — but was on the wrong end of a 107-96 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets led by as many as 24, before a late rearguard action pegged the margin back. Dellavedova had 11 points, three assists and three rebounds and hit the side’s only three-pointer of the first half. Aussie lottery pick Thon Maker did not get on the floor for the Bucks. The Bucks suffered from a lack of spacing throughout the game, especially without injured sharpshooter Khris Middleton, but their young superstar Gianni Antetokounmpo had 31 points, nine rebounds and five assists in a superb all-round performance. Small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist led the way for Charlotte with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Elsewhere, Boomer Aron Baynes had 8 points and 3 boards in 15 minutes off the bench during the Detroit Pistons’ 109-91 loss to Toronto, DeMar DeRozan’s 21-point third term giving him 40 for the game.
