Alex Volkanovski is aiming to join the most elite list of UFC fighters and become a double champion across two weight divisions in a blockbuster fight this weekend.
The 35-year-old Aussie will take on Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on Sunday morning (AEDT) in a lightweight title fight and a rematch of their epic clash in February.
UFC 294: Makhachev vs. Volkanovski 2 | SUN 22nd OCT 5AM AEDT | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports
Volkanovski took the fight on just 11 days notice after Charles Oliveira was forced to pull out through injury.
The featherweight champion won’t need to cut as much weight for the lightweight bout, but it’s still remarkable he’s stepped in to fight Makhachev, who is arguably the toughest man to beat in UFC.
Volkanovski will lose no fans if he loses on Sunday, but an upset win to cement his GOAT status will be even more heroic given his short preparation.
Makhachev launched a bizarre attack on his opponent in the pre-fight press conference, claiming Volkanovski had only agreed to fight him again for a big payday.
“Everybody know what you need. Just money, that’s it,” he said.
“He just comes to make money.
“He not bring his belt.
“I put my belt up.
“While I am here he’ll never be champion of my division.”
