THE 28th Imparja Cup kicked off in Alice Springs yesterday and the prestigious event is once again exclusively Territorian.

The first Cup in 1993 featured only Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, but the 2021 edition goes back to the future with 17 teams competing in three divisions.

Regular interstate teams are unable to compete as COVID restrictions play their part in the tournament’s makeup.

Tennant Creek captain Lachlan Dunemann believes it’s “awesome” to have the Territory flavour this year.

Dunemann top scored with an unbeaten 65 and was instrumental in the 24-run win over Top End Thunder.

While he appreciates the opportunity to play cricket, he also understands the benefits of the cup to the community.

“It’s always humbling to come here to Alice Springs, beautiful place, and just play some cricket.”
