Tennis world blown away as Matteo Gigante calls for video review after ball pierces through net

The tennis world has been left in disbelief after an incident that had to be seen to be believed transpired at the Canadian Open.

The tennis world has been left in disbelief after a truly bizarre moment at the Canadian Open.

During a second-round match in Montreal, Italian tennis player Matteo Gigante called for a video review claiming Gabriel Diallo’s return went through the net.

You can watch the incredible moment in the player above.

Fans in attendance were stunned by the review, that was until the replay showed he was right.

Diallo appeared to hit a regulation return off Gigante’s serve that clipped the tape.

The 23-year-old then attempted an audacious drop shot that hit the net, before complaining that his opponent’s shot had gone through the net.

And replays confirmed Diallo’s return had indeed managed to somehow pierce the net.

The point was given to Gigante, who went on to hold serve. However, that is where his joy would end as he was comfortably dispatched 6-3, 7-6(5).

But fans were left contemplating what they had just witnessed and how it was even possible for a ball to go through a net.

“OK, I’ve never seen this before,” one fan wrote as the video circulated online,

“Am I glitching or what? This is kinda crazy lol,” another said.

While others asked: “How is that possible?” and “I honestly thought that was impossible”.

A tennis ball passing through the net is definitely an unusual occurrence, but it can happen due to a combination of factors such as net construction, damage and ball speed and spin.

A tennis net is made of interwoven cords, and sometimes, if the tension is not uniform or if there is damage to the net, there can be small gaps or weak spots where a ball can potentially squeeze through.

But with all that said, in a professional match, you may never see it again in your lifetime.
