Nick Kyrgios reveals full comeback plans next week in New York

After almost two years sidelined with injury, Nick Kyrgios has revealed his full comeback plans with two key events in New York next week to determine if he will make a competitive return.

Nick Kyrgios has fought back from fears he would never play competitive tennis again to make a singles and doubles comeback in New York next week as the Australian star looks set to relaunch his career.

Kyrgios is set to return to the court in an exhibition mixed doubles event with Naomi Osaka on August 20, ahead of the US Open starting in New York on August 26.

He will launch his comeback in Mixed Madness at Arthur Ashe Stadium alongside Osaka and then he will step it up a notch a few days later when he takes part in the UTS New York event at Forest Hill Stadium on August 22-23 where he is scheduled to play Casper Ruud.

Final entries for the US Open grand slam event won’t be revealed until Thursday, but it is not expected that Kyrgios will be part of the field.

It is the first time Kyrgios will take to the court in a competitive match since a one-off appearance at Stuttgart in 2023, having earlier been sidelined since November 2022.

The 28-year-old has endured a horrific run of injuries and setbacks, with knee and wrist surgeries thwarting the talented star just when it looked like his career was set to skyrocket.

Kyrgios had reached the Wimbledon final and gone on a giant-killing run through the US before the setbacks and must now fight his way back to the top.

Starting with a singles battle against world No.8 Ruud will give Kyrgios a clear indication of whether he can return to compete at the highest level again.

Kyrgios first raised hopes he was on the comeback trail at Wimbledon last July when he stepped out of the commentary booth for a training session with Novak Djokovic.

But now he is ready to step onto the court for a competitive match and see if he can relaunch a career that has promised so much but has yet to deliver the coveted grand slam success he knows he is capable of achieving.

“Hey guys, it’s NK here,” he said on Instagram.

“I just want to inform everyone that keeps up with the UTS or any tennis fan out there that I will be competing on the 22nd of August at the Forest Hill Stadium in New York.

“I know it’s been a long time but my body is finally ready to get back out there and have some fun.

“I will see if I’m still able to go up against some of the best players in the world starting off with my old rival Casper Ruud.

“Casper, please take it easy on me.

“I can’t wait to be out there again competing in front of all the amazing fans and hopefully I can still bring some life to the sport.”
