It was their first real test of the 2024 season and the NSW Waratahs came up trumps against the Queensland Reds but there’s still work to be done if they are to reclaim the Super Rugby U19s crown according to their coach.
Dan England was delighted with the 42-31 win on the road but unhappy that it was “way too close and stressful’’ a times for his liking.
The Waratahs scored first points in the match and then ran in six tries to five to secure the important victory.
The win came soon after the Tahs U16s also defeated the Queensland Reds in their Super Rugby bout in Queensland.
“It was a bit close but at the same time it was good for them to have such a good, close contest,’’ England said.
“Both teams attacked really well and produced some pretty dangerous attack.’’
England said the round three battle had plenty of learnings for his young guns.
“They learned that when we manage the game properly and nail the game plan we are really effective,’’ he said.
“But when we play free flowing ball we give other teams more opportunity to score.
“Any error, from both sides, was capitalised on by the outside backs.’’
England identified captain Eamon Doyle as his standout.
”He was my man of the match,’’ England said.
“Brendan Palmer was also very good and Tom Klem as well. He got 60 minutes out there.’’
England said he wants to see an improved performance in the Waratahs next match against the Brumbies at Pittwater Rugby Park on Saturday.
“The Brumbies are a totally different team. We want to work on our contact and physicality next week and maintaining possession in the match.’’
On Sunday, Klem and Liam Grover, who ended the match with two, opened the scoring for the Waratahs with Finlay King scoring two tries in the first half for the Reds.
The Waratahs took a 24-17 lead into the break with the Reds coming to within three in the second half before the Tahs again stretched the scoreline.
Other scorers for the Waratahs were Brendan Palmer, Sid Harvey and Luca Cleverley.
Harvey kicked two penalties and three from six conversions.
The Reds other scorers were James Martens, Xavier Rubens and Daniel Malum.
