Slated number one pick Harley Reid runs water and wets a line in Darwin

He will be number one pick in the AFL Draft next week, but that didn’t stop Reid from being the waterboy for an Under 18 team in Darwin at the weekend.

The AFL’s most hyped talent enjoyed his time up north over the past week, spending his free-time running water and wetting a line in the nation’s northernmost capital.

Rising superstar Harley Reid was in the thick of it int the NTFL, running water for the Nightcliff Tigers’ U18s and training with the club during the week.

“He came up to the club with some of our former players to check the place out,” Nightcliff Tigers President Mark Dodge said.

“Our under-18s coach started having a chat with him and said ‘what do you think about running water for the boys’, and Reid replied, ‘it’ll cost you a kit’.

“So he said ‘done’ and gave him a shirt and shorts and that was the trade off.”

Reid was fully involved, giving the players tips and running messages from the coach.

“The 18s thought it was unreal to have a bloke, and a nice bloke at that, giving his support, thoughts and tips on the game,” Dodge said.

“Having someone like that and calibre of player was a huge lift for the team and made them work even harder I reckon.

“They all took notice of what he did and said and that’s super important for developing players.

When he wasn’t running water or kicking the ball around at training, the young Victorian spent his spare time catching up with mates and immersing himself in the local scene.

“He was also up here to have a bit of a feel for the lifestyle,” the club president said.

“Apparently he spent some time having a fish as well.”
