AFL Round 5 teams: Every club’s selection news and dilemmas

Geelong has been boosted for its Round 5 clash, and have dumped popular KFC SuperCoach pick. Plus, Melbourne has named its Bayley Fritsch replacement.

Melbourne will turn to journeyman Mitch Brown – and not fancied recruit Ben Brown – to help kick a winning score against Hawthorn on Sunday.

With Ben Brown building fitness in the VFL, where he has been named in a Casey forward line also featuring Sam Weideman and Majak Daw for Sunday’s clash in Box Hill, and smooth goalkicker Bailey Fritsch (hand) unavailable, the Demons have chosen former Geelong and Essendon discard Brown to straighten up their attack.

Fritsch has slotted 10.6 playing as the spearhead in the club’s best start to a season since 1994 although he is set to miss two games after fracturing his hand at training on Thursday.

The blow has opened the door for 30-year-old Brown, who has fought hard to play 75 games having rebooted his career as a top-up player during the Bombers’ drugs saga.

Coach Simon Goodwin lost patience with out of form defender Neville Jetta and midfielder Tom Sparrow despite the 4-0 start to the season.

Michael Hibberd will replace Jetta while key defender Harrison Petty will help combat Hawthorn’s young forward line after coming in for concussed star Steven May.

The Hawks replaced suspended goalkicker Mitchell Lewis with Jacob Koschitzke and have loaded up on youth with Oliver Hanrahan and Conor Nash also breaking through.

The Demons are shooting for four-straight victories against the Hawks for the first time since 1957-60, a run which started with a preliminary final victory during their golden era.

Geelong will debut Sam De Koning against North Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium, and if the 200cm swingman settles in the line-up he could replace tiring servant Lachie Henderson.

The athletic big man is one of 10 children, including older brother Tom, who plays for

Carlton.

Jeremy Cameron (hamstring) was not named in the AFL or VFL team despite returning to match fitness.

The Cats have been strengthened by the returns of Patrick Dangerfield and Gary Rohan from suspension and Brandon Parfitt form hip soreness.

The last of Collingwood’s firesale will also be unveiled down the highway as wrecking ball Atu Bosenavulagi cracks his way into the Kangas’ 22.

But there is more selection pain for the wooden spoon-bound Roos, with emerging star Luke Davies-Uniacke (calf) joining Luke McDonald (pectoral) and Cam Zurhaar (concussion) on the sidelines.

The Roos are planted to the bottom of the ladder with a miserable percentage of 43 and have lost their past six games against the Cats by an average of five goals.
