TERRITORY product Wayne Bilston made his mark on the national stage after starring for the Australian Barbarians at the Under-19 Rugby Championship in Canberra.

The Katherine-based Bilston plays his club rugby for the South Darwin Rabbitohs, where his talent and work ethic has caught the eye of many, including club president James de Dassel.

“He has all the attributes — he has the size, the speed and the ability,” de Dassel told the NT News.

“He also has the drive. A lot of players have the ability but not all have that drive to take them to the next level.”

Bilston featured in three of the Barbarians’ four games, missing the final match against the ACT Brumbies after suffering a concussion in the previous match.

His standout performance came in the side’s 29-19 win against Western Australia, where Bilston played in his favoured position of fullback.

He was moved to wing in the second game against Brisbane City, which saw the Barbarians lose 0-36.

Bilston then suffered a concussion early in the Barbarian’s losing effort against Queensland Country (28-24) which saw him miss out on the rest of the competition.

“He’s recovered now and hopes to re-join Souths for the upcoming Summer of Sevens,” de Dassel said.

“He really enjoyed the 10-day camp and will now wait for the announcements of the Australia under-19s squad which will tour New Zealand in 2020.”

Bilston also put on a dominant performance when playing for Brisbane’s Churchie College throughout the 2018 GPS school rugby season.

“He was a standout for them and got a lot of media attention there,” de Dassel said.

“I think he needs to go to more of these training camps. The selectors have him on their radar, now he has to show them that he wants it.”
