GLYN Schofield’s New Year began with a thud then ended in triumph on Multilateral in the Listed $100,000 Tattersall’s Club Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick yesterday.
The champion jockey was fortunate to escape serious injury when dislodged from Slydini in the Theatre of the Horse just prior to the second race.
Slydini was scratched and Schofield left nursing a bruising right ankle.
Schofield was noticeably limping when he came out to ride Multilateral but he produced a tactically brilliant effort to win the feature race.
Multilateral ($3.80 equal favourite) was the only favourite to win on the eight-race program. In other Randwick news:
#Trainer Chris Waller won his third successive Tattersalls’s Club Cup after previous wins with Moriarty (2013) and Permit (2014).

Schofield gave Multilateral the run of the race and showed his experience when he kept Ghost Protocol hemmed in at the top of the straight, forcing the latter’s rider to check and then ease his mount to the centre of the course of make his run.
This proved decisive as Schofield drove Multilateral to a clear lead and the grey stayer was able to hold off the late charge of Ghost Protocol to win by a length.
“Multilateral settled really in the run which was important as sometimes he doesn’t that,’’ Schofield said.
“The speed was nice and genuine, which he enjoyed, and he was pretty strong to the end.’’
Multilateral gave the Waller stable a clean sweep of the summer staying features so far after wins in the Christmas Cup with Saigon Tea and Summer Cup with I’m Imposing last month.
“It is a credit to Glyn as he has done a lot of work with this horse and he is hard work,’’ Waller said.
Sydney’s premier trainer hasn’t ruled out starting Multilateral in the Listed $150,000 Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) next Friday where he may clash with stablemate I’m Imposing.
Waller also had success at Flemington when Calming Influence, ridden by Damien Oliver, held on for a narrow win in the George Watson Handicap (1400m).
There were two stakes at Flemington with the Danny O’Brien-trained Decircles getting up to take out the Group Standish Handicap (1200m).
Favourite Reparations finished third in the Standish, leaving comeback trainer Lee Freedman resting on 499 stakes wins.
O’Brien had the favourite De Little Engine in the Bagot Handicap (2500m) but he could only struggle into third behind Averau.
