DARWIN greyhound trainer Steele Bolton enjoyed a brilliant 2020 with his expanded kennel, gaining him his first Darwin greyhound premiership.

Bolton started last year with just 15 dogs, but slowly expanded his kennel with 44 runners to his name by the end of the competition.

And with the dogs came results with a whopping 189 wins for the accomplished trainer, including both the Easter Cup and Darwin Cup.

“I’m stoked with the result to be honest. It was a pretty big effort from the whole team with a lot of people involved,” Bolton told the NT News.

“It’s my first time winning a premiership and it’s a great honour to have done so. I just go about my business and let my dogs do the talking.

“Winning the Easter Cup and the Darwin Cup were my two biggest achievements of the year, and though they were challenges with breaks in the height of COVID we managed to get through.”

The battling five-year-old Snoop A Loop was Bolton’s dog of the year with 19 wins to his name, while Mepunga Zeus impressed with his Easter Cup victory.

And with success already coming his way in the early meetings of 2021, Bolton has his eyes on another strong year which could see him send a few dogs to southern races such as the Murray Bridge Cup.

“Snoop A Loop has been my best dog and was named greyhound of the year with 19 wins,” Bolton said.

“He does it himself at the end of the day. He’s a bit of an icon and put me on the map with people coming down to see him during the week.

“There’s a possibility to send some dogs down south this year to see how Darwin stacks up against the rest of Australia.

“The industry up here is doing pretty good with 70 race meetings on Sky Racing.

“We’re certainly punching above our weight at the moment.”
