GREYHOUND club stalwart Robbie Brennan is still chasing that elusive Darwin Cup win 20 years after starting out as a trainer.
Brennan, a life member and vice-president of the Winnellie Park club, took an 18-month break from training recently but now he’s back with three dogs he has high hopes for.
“We had a lull for about 18 months. We downsized and I had a bit of a rest but this new lot appears to be worth hanging on to,” Brennan, 60, said.
The trio includes litter brothers Dynamic Vision, who has won his past two races, and Illusive Vision, who are both owned by Winnellie Park enthusiast Dave Davies.
“I have the most confidence in a dog called Arnhem Warrior, who won last week,” he said.
“I have stepped him up in distance to the 500 metres (tonight) but he has not drawn well in box eight.
“ He will go OK for us.”
Brennan has trained lots of greyhounds over the years but he still thinks his best was a bitch called Soul Singer.
“She won nine in a row and from 13 starts she had 11 wins and two seconds,” he said.
“We had 700m races back in those days. She won over that distance, 383m and 277m.”
Soul Singer made the Darwin Cup final one year after winning a heat.
“The Vision dogs are not 500m dogs,” he said.
“Arnhem Warrior is up to the standard of making the race but it depends what comes from down south.”
Brennan believes the current star of Darwin greyhound racing, Just Proper, can win the cup.
“He’s one of the best dogs I’ve seen race on this track. My tip is that his trainer Peter (Donnelley) will run him in the cup,” he said.
