WELL-TRAVELLED jockey Kim Gladwin combined with long-time supporter Dick Leech for an upset win with Adynata in the $35,000 Colemans Printing Cup, the feature event on Day 6 of the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival at Fannie Bay yesterday.

Adynata (20-1) downed his more fancied rivals with a dominant performance in the 1300m event.

From a wide barrier, Gladwin was forced to race three and four-wide for the majority of the trip.

But Adynata refused to be denied over the concluding stages after hitting the front turning for home.

At the line he still had three quarters of a length to spare from a gallant Ornithologist (Paul Denton), with Igles Star (Felicia Bergstrand) making up ground into third.

Favourite Grand Britannia was next, ahead of Belle Ez and Admiral’s Order, who made the pace to the home turn.

Gladwin, based in Alice Springs and one of the NT’s best riders, is something of a journeyman jockey, evidenced by the fact that just last weekend — when day five of the Darwin Carnival would have been the obvious choice — he was instead riding at Roebourne, a former gold rush town in the Western Australia’s Pilbara region some 200km from Port Hedland.

He had success too, his three rides resulting in a double, although his Cup mount failed to fire.

The previous week, he had combined to win two of the Day 4 Carnival features, the Buntine with The Ruffian and the Unibet WFA aboard Seal No More — his mounts in the Darwin Cup and Palmerston Sprint, respectively.

“That was a big effort,” Gladwin said of Adynata’s win.

“He never got near the inside fence but was just so tough over the final stages.

“Dick’s had a few little issues with the horse but he’s back to his best now.”

Leech, who combined with Gladwin to win the Palmerston Sprint with Lucid Reflection back in 2010, was also delighted by his charge’s effort.

“He feels the humidity in Darwin and in the lead-up to the Carnival I was struggling to get him right,’’ he said.

“Even though he won here in May, it was only his ability that got him home then and we’ve only just got him 100 per cent now.

“His coat’s looking so much better and he’s racing accordingly.

“And Kim did a good job from a difficult barrier.”

Leech, like Gladwin, will be represented in the features this weekend. Mango Mojito does battle for him in the Palmerston on Saturday, while on Monday he could well have two Cup runners in Smarty Mac and Lethal Arrow.

Adynata, a five-year-old son of Econsul and the Flying Spur mare Our Flying Babe, has now won seven of his 23 starts for owner/trainer Leech, and with a further four placings to his credit, has earned more than $96,000 in stakes.

He’s a versatile customer too, having won at 1100m, 1300m (twice), 1400m (twice) and 1600m (twice).
