Pies veteran Chris Mayne earns a one-year contract extension

The Pies were labelled a laughing stock when they signed Chris Mayne on a lucrative four year deal. But he has proved the doubters wrong in recent seasons, and now has been rewarded for his consistency.

Collingwood veteran Chris Mayne’s late career resurgence has been rewarded with a one-year contract extension which will see him through to the end of 2021.

Mayne, 31, was out of contract at the end of the season and has become a mainstay of the Pies side over the past two seasons, playing 42 games in that period.

Collingwood was met with criticism initially for signing the former Docker on a $2 million four-year deal after playing 172 games in nine seasons with Fremantle.

But since playing just three games in his first season at the Pies in 2017, Mayne has proved to be a steady contributor on a wing, recording career high highs for disposals, uncontested possessions and clearances last season.

Mayne is thrilled to push his career into a fourteenth season, which could see him reach the elusive 250-game barrier.

“I’m really pleased to have another year to share in the Collingwood experience,” Mayne said.

“The journey so far has been tremendously rewarding, personally and professionally. There have been a few twists in the tale but so much to be grateful for and the faith we have shown in each other makes me very proud.”

Pies list manager Ned Guy says it is more than just his improved on-field efforts that earnt him an extension.

“Chris is an example to all of his teammates of what dedication, discipline and football smarts can achieve. He is also a fantastic clubman who people thrive around,” Guy told the club website.

“He helps our team tick and for that his teammates and coaches value him highly. An extension is appropriate recognition of that.”
