A Top End rugby league player has suffered a “devastating” injury during a match.

Palmerston Raiders’ Josh Tui shattered his C5 and C6 vertebrae during his team’s Round 12 B-grade clash in the NRLNT competition.

The accident left Tui in need of urgent medical care, and a GoFundMe has been set up in his name in the hours since.

Known for his “infectious smile”, “unwavering determination” and “caring nature”, Tui has a long and hard road ahead.

The Raider only started playing the 13-man code this year with his past in gridiron, meaning he was essentially a rookie despite his age.

“At the start of the year, Josh joined the Palmerston Raiders with the dream of playing and learning the sport we all love, rugby league,” his coaches said.

“Coming from a gridiron background, he had a lot to learn.

“One of the main challenges in coaching Josh was his struggle with proper ball handling; he often worried about ball security and where he should stand on the field.”

A quick learner, Tui developed into a hard hitter and strong ball runner, earning a call-up in a few A-grade matches.

Tui would always lend a helping hand when needed earning the admiration of all those in the club.

“He was always the first to lend a hand at home games, arriving at 7am to help with the BBQ or assist wherever needed,” his coaches said.

“His dedication was evident every weekend as he played alongside his mates.

“What happened to Josh is heartbreaking, and I hope the entire Darwin and rugby league community will rally to support him.”

Fundraiser organiser Jade Johnson explained Tui’s recovery would be arduous and extensive.

“He faces an uphill battle towards recovery that includes extensive medical treatments, surgeries, and rehabilitation,” the post said.

“The road ahead is long and challenging, and we are reaching out for your support.”

Despite the insurance coverage, the cumulative costs accrued will be significant for Josh and his family.

The fundraiser achieved $5,758 of the $35k target in less than 24 hours, with a number of large donations flooding in from the community and players alike.

“The costs associated with Josh’s recovery are overwhelming,” the post read.

“Medical expenses, including surgeries, hospital stays, rehabilitation, and necessary equipment, are quickly piling up.

“Despite insurance coverage, there are significant out-of-pocket expenses that we simply cannot manage alone.”

The money raised will be used for urgent medical procedures and surgeries, rehab and physical therapy, as well as ongoing care and support services Tui may require in the future.

“Josh is a fighter, and with your help, we know he can overcome this life-altering injury,” the post said.

“Your support, prayers, and positive thoughts mean the world to us.

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your generosity and kindness.”
