RYAN Warfe represents all that is good in a wingman – plenty of foot speed, a high kicking efficiency and strong hands.
The Palmerston midfielder is the Round 13 NT News Rising Star nominee, joining teammate Tyrell Lui in the race for the coveted $500 award.
In his third season of league football, Warfe has established a reputation for hardness and consistency after a junior career that included the captaincy of the Pies’ under-18 side.
Palmerston’s coach Alwyn Davey said the 20-year-old was an important part of the club’s rebuild where talented juniors were taking on more senior roles.
“Ryan’s consistency on matchdays is a big part of his game. He is always at the contest or presenting himself as an option further up the ground,” Davey said.
“With that comes experience and his consistency means he is a regular senior player, one we’ve come to rely on.”
Davey and his brains trust have placed a major emphasis on youth in an effort to get young players to the 50-game mark as soon as possible.
“Ryan is a great example of a young bloke wanting to get more experience at league level and the results are starting to show, which is what we want to happen.”
The NTFL Rising Star wins a $500 gift voucher and a trophy to signal their development as a young player with most potential to succeed.
Past winners include Geelong on-baller Brandan Parfitt, St Kilda brothers Xavier and Raphael Clarke and hard nut Melbourne defender Matthew Whelan.
