Nine host in tears over 'beautiful story'

The Olympics haven’t even officially started yet but already Nine Olympic host Allison Langdon has not been able to hold back the tears.

Langdon was overcome with emotion after watching a profile on Australian BMX star Saya Sakakibara, voiced by her brother Kai.

Kai, also a BMX star, was left in a coma and after a horrific crash in a World Cup event in Bathurst in 2020. He was in hospital for eight weeks before spending months in the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit in western Sydney. His injuries have permanently impacted Kai’s ability to speak – and his movement.

In an emotional video, Kai said he felt “pride, love and excitement”, watching his sister compete.

Saya also crashed and was left unconscious at the Tokyo Olympics. With Saya preparing to race in Paris, her brother added: “She does it’s for both of us. She wears my race number – 77. It’s like I’m there with her … Saya and I never give up.”

“What a beautiful, beautiful story. I didn’t know Kai was doing that story about his sister. So so beautiful,” Langdon said.

Saya was also moved. “It’s bringing tears to my eyes,” Saya said. “To see it together and hear him say those words, it’s making me very emotional already. BMX means a lot and it means a lot to both Kai and I.”

Saya is hoping to go further in Paris following the devastating end to her run in Tokyo where she was left motionless in a horror incident.

Her wheel was clipped by Alise Willoughby during a tense semi-final contest which resulted in her being eliminated from going any further.

“I feel like I let everyone down especially my brother,” she said at the time.

“I can’t believe it’s over. It just really sucks for sure. Honestly, I don’t really know what happened, but I know that I was riding really well.

“My stats were going really well. I came down with Alise (Willoughby) who caught up with me, we came down together. That’s all I remember.”

The BMX competition will get underway at the Paris Olympics from July 30.
