‘You’re kidding’: Outrageous scenes as Bulldogs defeat NZ Warriors

Rugby league fans have been treated to a truly outrageous contest with commentators left in disbelief over the wild scenes that unfolded.

Matt Burton wins it for the Bulldogs after fourth attempt

Rugby league just can’t stop delivering moments of pure madness.

On Saturday fans were left out of their seats and screaming at their televisions as the Canterbury Bulldogs edged out the New Zealand Warriors in golden point to claim the 13-12 win.

The contest descended into chaos in the final 15 minutes with a Bulldogs try disallowed, a Warriors try falling short and a Warriors field goal attempt being charged down.

But the biggest moment came with a little over three minutes left on the clock.

After a Matt Burton bomb was knocked on by Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, the Dogs had a fresh set 20 out from the try line and moved to within 5m out before Burton lined up to kick the sealer.

Burton’s shot looked good off the boot but it slapped into the upright and bounced back into play and the chaos of it all left those in the commentary box in disbelief.

“Burton wants it, Burton’s got it. One shot … he’s hit the post again, hits the post again. You’re kidding,” Andrew Voss shouted on Fox League.

“What about this game, how good is it! Who can write that script?”

Corey Parker said: “Twenty out, perfect position, Matt Burton one of the best kickers of the football and he’s hit the upright.”

Voss added: “Hold ya beer Spielberg, rugby league’s got its own scriptwriters.”

The moment left rugby league fans watching on in just as much disbelief with many labelling the contest the game of the year.

Zero Tackle editor Scott Pryde wrote: “Rugba leeg. That is all.”

One user wrote: “Nah this is insane.”

A second added: “The best game this year.”

A third wrote: “What a game of Rugby League.”

A fourth stated: “This is one of the best games of rugby league I have ever seen.”

Burton had another chance in the dying stages of the first period of golden point with his kick well and truly on target, unfortunately it just didn’t have the legs as Tuivasa-Sheck hauled in the attempt under the posts.

The Warriors marched down the ground and looked like they were about to steal victory from the jaws of defeat.

A kick towards the posts however missed its mark, with replays showing Bulldogs star Reed Mahoney had charged down the attempt and got a hand on the ball to deflect it away.

The contest went into a the second period of golden point and it was fourth time lucky for Burton, who slotted the matchwinning kick.

A third shot was chased down with the Dogs recovering the footy and lining up to give Burton another crack at the win.

He made no mistake this time around as his shot sailed high and clipped the inside of the upright before sailing through the big sticks.

“I never thought it would have come down to that but it’s a credit to the boys how hard we worked. We just hung in there and kept grinding them out and I was lucky enough to get it there in the end,” Burton said after the game.

It makes it two straight extra-time wins for the Bulldogs and takes them to fifth spot on the NRL ladder.
