Warriors player Josh Curran has been charged with assault and stealing a mobile phone after an alleged incident at a nightclub earlier this month.

Police confirmed Curran had been charged following an altercation which is alleged to have occurred on the night of the NRL grand final at Port Macquarie.

Officers attached to Mid North Coast Police District conducted an investigation into reports a 16-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted and his mobile phone stolen at a nightclub on William Street at Port Macquarie, on Sunday October 2

“Following inquiries, investigators arrested a 23-year-old man after attending Manly Police Station on Wednesday,” a police statement read.

“He was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and larceny.

“The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on Wednesday 7 December.”

The teenager was left with facial injuries following the incident which occurred about 3am.

Curran made his representative debut last month after being picked on the bench for Australia’s PM’s XIII side.

Warriors chief executive Cameron George said the club was aware of the chargers.

“We as a club will now allow the legal process to be concluded before any further considerations are given from our perspective,” George said.

Curran has avoided being automatically stood down.

Under the NRL’s no-fault, stand-down policy, players charged with offences which carry a potential penalty of at least 11 years or more are stood down until the matter is finalised.

His offence carries a maximum 10 years of jail.

The NRL has the discretionary power to stand Curran down like they did with Cowboys back-rower Luciano Leilua.

Leilua will fight domestic violence charges at a hearing next year but is facing the prospect of missing the start of the season.

He is next due in court on May 18 after pleading not guilty.
