A supposed lighthearted comment from a member of the Dragons’ coaching staff is believed to be behind Francis Molo’s decision to want out of the club.

The reason why prop Francis Molo wants to quit St George Illawarra can be revealed.

He got upset over what was supposed to be a lighthearted comment relating to alcohol made by a member of Shane Flanagan’s coaching staff. Molo took it to heart because he hasn’t touched a drink for almost two years after being found guilty of a domestic violence offence.

In 2023, he pleaded guilty in Port Kembla Local Court to one charge of stalking or intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical or mental harm.

He avoided a conviction and was sentenced to a conditional release order for 18 months. He has been off alcohol ever since.

Molo fronted the Dragons board with manager Wade Rushton last week to fight a breach notice for not attending training. He is expected to return to training on Monday but is standing firm and it’s now almost certain he has played his final game for the Red V.
