MICHAEL Morgan has revealed how he and his right edge teammates bonded together in the pre-season to become the Cowboys’ strong side.
The five-eighth, along with Ethan Lowe, Justin O’Neill and Kyle Feldt, have been praised by coach Paul Green in the past week for their vast improvement in defence this season.
Green and Morgan admitted that throughout last year’s stellar season, the right side of the Cowboys defence was the weaker edge.
This year has been a different story and Morgan said he, Lowe, O’Neill and Feldt had agreed during the pre-season that things had to change.
“We felt like we were letting the team down,” Morgan said. “We did feel like the weaker side.
“Teams would pull us apart a bit, bring out our weaknesses and put us under pressure.
“We’d meet before (pre-season) training and wanted to make sure we weren’t the weak edge or letting the rest of the boys down.’’
Morgan said the work the foursome did was not just on their defence, but also their mental approach to games, learning to trust each other, and from that their confidence has grown.
LATE MAIL: Zillman to return
EXPECTATIONS: Why Inglis can never do enough
The Cowboys have won three of their first five games, with Green singling out his right edge for playing a big part in keeping the Dragons scoreless last week.
North Queensland will be looking to continue that strong defence against the Panthers tonight and Morgan said his side are definitely in the right state of mind to do so.
“We knew going into this season that we didn’t want teams targeting our edge because they could score points through us,” he said.
“We made a conscious effort to work together ... to get the confidence within each other that we can solve things that are thrown at us.
“We have to be confident in each other that we can get the job done together and we will work hard together and keep turning up for each other.’’
