SuperCoach Buy, Hold, Sell round 7: Time to cash in on rare cheapie crop including Dylan Egan

The SuperCoach cheapie market is red-hot at the moment. Don’t miss out on these incredible buys even if you are a week late, writes TOM SANGSTER.

It wouldn’t be a weekend in SuperCoach without an injury crisis.

Christian Tuipulotu (hamstring), Jesse Arthars (concussion), Haumole Olakau’atu (shoulder), Addin Fonua-Blake (groin) and Jahrome Hughes (shoulder) are among the latest crop, although hopefully the injuries to Olakau’atu, Hughes and AFB aren’t too serious and they can take the field this week.

BUY

* Dylan Egan (99) - It’s rare that two such strong back row cheapies are available in the one week. This meant Egan, although purchased by a hefty 20,000 SuperCoaches, was avoided by many in favour of the far more popular Thomas Cant (46,000).

But the young Dragon got the last laugh, firstly by earning a starting spot on game day, then by smashing out 99 points. Plenty more will go there again this week, albeit for an extra $80,000 or so.

A must-have for those who don’t already own and even a play in 17s if he remains starting. Finished with ice on his elbow as a precaution but he’ll be right for the upcoming round.

* Thomas Cant (56) – All in pure base. Very solid performance from the most popular buy of the week, enacting a rise of almost exactly $100,000. Is he still a buy at $370,000? Absolutely, but Egan is the priority.

* Mawene Hiroti (73) - Has averaged 75 in his two games so far. SuperCoach Gold predicts he will rise by $150,000 in the two weeks he has left in first grade before Kayal Iro returns from a hamstring injury.

* David Fifita (128) - Fifita’s second start of the season resulted in his first ton, courtesy of a pair of try assists and 11 tackle busts. In 74 minutes he ran for over 200m from 17 carries, missed just one tackle and clearly looked the Gold Coast’s most dangerous player. Having dropped almost $100,000 following a poor start that included long stints on the bench, Fifita will be a cut-priced and popular trade this week.

* Joe Tapine (103) - Tapine produced an epic performance against the Cowboys. He has averaged 95.3 since his opening round suspension.

* Angus Crichton (76) - The proven SuperCoach performer finally notched his first big attacking stat of the season (a try) and is available at a discount of $55,000 on his starting price. Will need to be sold over Origin as he’ll miss five games over this period.

* Nathan Cleary (58) - Yes, even after the Panthers’ Thursday flop against the Dolphins, Cleary is a buy. Take out the injury-affected game and he’s averaged 75. Available this week for under $650,000, his lowest price in a looong time.

* James Tedesco (91) - The old chook’s still got it. Teddy has averaged 82.5 but is available for a relative bargain this week - a discount of around $75,000 on his starting price. Assuming he misses Origin, which is a fair assumption if Dylan Edwards stays fit, Tedesco is THE player to get SuperCoaches through given the Roosters play all three big byes. Conversely, if he makes Origin he will miss five matches over Origin - the worst schedule of any side.

* Harry Grant (83) - It’s been a quiet start to the year and he’s therefore dropped around $80,000. But the current price is tempting after he finally got into the attacking stats with a try and try assist. Tom Starling, Peter Mamouzelous or Sandon Smith up to Grant is tempting.

* Valentine Holmes (97) - With left-side partner Christian Tuipolotu sure to be a popular sell, Holmes looms as a great replacement. His price has dropped over $80,000 from round one and he’s a CTW gun worth splurging $700,000 on.

HIT PAUSE ON TOP CHEAPIE

* Billy Smith (79) - Was set to become the most purchased player in SuperCoach for the coming round after consecutive 70s, but is facing a 1-2 game ban for a high shot. SuperCoaches therefore need to hold off for a week and instead target in round 8.

POD ALERT

* Herbie Farnworth (78) - Yet to score below 55 points this season despite only notching one try for the year. Base beast and plays the first bye in round 12.

HOLD

* Kalyn Ponga (21) – Barely sighted except for two errors and two missed tackles, a massive blow for SuperCoaches given he was the most popular captain of the week. A sell is temping given the Knights have the worst attack in the competition and Ponga sits with a BE around 150. But he also has Warriors, Rabbitohs, Titans and Eels in the next five games.

* Nicho Hynes (38) - Plenty will sell after two lacklustre showings in a row. He has a massive BE but realistically the only player to sell to is Cleary.

* Jahrome Hughes (16) - This week’s fourth most popular SuperCoach buy failed to emerge after half-time due to a shoulder injury. The injury is not serious and he is rated a 50-50 for the coming week. Stick strong.

Jahrome Hughes won’t return today, succumbing to a shoulder injury suffered midway through the 1st half.

Storm indicated if desperate he could’ve played on, but with a short turnaround they took him off in hopes of having him fit in 5 days time.

* Haumole Olakau’atu (43) - Suffered a right shoulder injury and 52,081 SuperCoaches eagerly await the results of scans. Update: 9.50am Monday: He’s been cleared of serious injury and is set to play.

* Jaxon Purdue (111) - The Cowboys have the bye this week and if Purdue flopped against the Rabbitohs he was likely a sell. However, Purdue scored a double and was exhilarating to watch every time he touched the ball with his turn of pace. While he started off as just a cheapie, he could soon be in keeper contention.

* Isaiah Iongi (33) - The Eels were hammered by the Raiders but Iongi has more rises to come and should peak perfectly for Parramatta’s bye in round 8.

* Naufahu Whyte (37) - Lowest score of the season but the minutes were still good with 52. He’s peaked in price for now, but will be very handy over Origin given the Roosters play all three big byes.

SELL

* Christian Tuipulotu (95) - Scored a double - taking his season tally to seven - before leaving the field with a hamstring injury.

* Addin Fonua-Blake (46) - Went to the sheds with an apparent groin injury and SuperCoaches wait with bated breath.

* Jesse Arthars (44) - Has peaked in price and is in doubt with concussion.

Addin Fonua Blake came off early with what appeared to be a groin issue - Sharks say he felt it early in the game but played through so hoping it is minor.

* Peter Mamouzelous (46) - A two-round average of 42.5 means the South Sydney hooker has peaked in price and he’ll be a popular sell.

* Jack Gosiewski (41) - The popular early-season cheapie has peaked in price and is now facing a 1-2 game ban.

* Gehamat Shibasaki (50) - Has peaked for now after price rises of almost $300,000. He doesn’t play the round 13 bye so do SuperCoaches cut the cord now? Or is he a keeper after averaging mid 60s?

* Robert Toia (35) - Looking good in actual NRL but can’t buy an attacking stat. He’s peaked after around $150,000 in rises.

* Sandon Smith (47) - Will sit with a BE in the 40s when the game opens for round 7. That suggests his price rises have come to an end after making over $150,000 and he’s not quite good enough to hold all the way through the byes.
