NRL round 14 teams: Full squads, changes and SuperCoach news, Nicho Hynes rested

NSW State of Origin halfback Nicho Hynes has been left out of Cronulla’s squad for this coming weekend and SuperCoaches have reacted immediately.

SuperCoach NRL Buy, Hold, Sell Round 14

SuperCoaches have reacted emphatically to the resting of Nicho Hynes, with the Wet Prince of Woolooware surging to become the most sold player this week.

Almost 6,000 SuperCoaches have sold Hynes so far this round, on top of almost 20,000 last week.

Hynes, who has an ongoing calf injury, likely plays only two of seven matches over the remainder of the Origin period.

WINNERS FROM TEAMS

* Blaize Talagi - Huge boost with the popular cheapie named starting centre for the Eels. The job security is good given the man he replaces, Bailey Simonsson, is out for the season with a knee issue. SuperCoach Plus predicts Talagi will make another 90K in the next two weeks. So let him ride for a little longer and make a decision before his round 16 bye.

SCROLL FOR FULL ROUND 14 SQUADS AND TEAM CHANGES

* Dylan Edwards - Not sure what to make of this. Edwards has been named on the extended bench to play just four days after the Origin match he was ruled out of due to a hamstring injury. It was originally slated as a 1-2 week injury. Surely he’s at long odds to play, especially given Penrith’s chequered recent history with soft tissue injuries (think Nathan Cleary).

* Sua Faalogo - Popular cheapie retains the fullback spot at the Storm with Ryan Papenhuyzen (leg fracture) still one or two weeks away.

* All Origin players except Nicho Hynes (more on Nicho below) - Hynes is the only Origin player confirmed to be rested. This means a host of popular Origin stars have been named for their clubs this week including Reece Walsh, Pat Carrigan, Payne Haas, Harry Grant, Matt Burton, J’maine Hopgood, Reuben Cotter and Valentine Holmes.

LOSERS FROM TEAMS

* Nicho Hynes - Good on the Sharks for paying SuperCoaches the respect we deserve. There will be no stringing along and frantic refreshing of Late Mail because Craig Fitzgibbon has confirmed Hynes will be rested. Assuming he is rested again following Origin 2, which is a fair assumption given the ongoing calf issue, and assuming he makes Origin 2, he’ll only play two of the next seven NRL games. If you are going to hold then you have to accept he may sit out chunks of time through Origin. If you are going to sell you need to accept that you will want to buy him back post-Origin. Both options come at a price.

* Josiah Karapani - Time for an admission, I (Rob) had a dream about Karapani last night. And in that dream, the former Rabbitoh not only scored three tries for the Broncos against the Sharks – he converted them too. But enough dreamland, time for some reality. Karapani has been very good in his two games for the Broncos averaging 68.5PPG and has a BE of -73 for his next game. The issue is, when will that game be? Karapani has been filling in for an injured Kotoni Staggs and Staggs is back this week. But do the Broncos find a different way to fit Karapani in? Maybe – plus the Broncos may opt to rest Reece Walsh or Selwyn Cobbo post Origin thus creating a slot for Karapani. If Staggs’ return is delayed another week is it worth bringing in Karapani for a one round price rise? Maybe – A score of 40 points (and keep in mind Karapani has averaged 37PPG in base alone so far) would generate an almost $100K price rise. Personally I’m chasing keepers with my trades now, but for those looking for one last good cheapie Karapani is an option. Maybe.

BUY

* David Fifita - The Gold Coast wrecking ball (we’re contractually obliged to use that descriptor for Dave) has not scored below 70 since he was eased in for his first game of the season and has a five round average (5RA) of 96.6PPG. With just one bye left to serve (Round 17), Fifita is a great buy if he misses Origin and even if he is brought into the Maroons he’s still a good buy.

* Eliesa Katoa - The first of our Kiwis, Katoa is in terrific form on an edge for the Storm and has scored six tries from his past eight games including a try in each of his past three. Averaging 45PPG in base and almost 10 more in tackle busts/offloads combined, Katoa has a pretty safe floor underpinning his attacking upside. Good buy whose next bye is round 19.

* Jahrome Hughes - Another Kiwi, another Storm player, another solid buy. Solid, but not great. Many are selling Hynes and buying Hughes which is a short to medium term move I can understand. Hynes is carrying a calf niggle, has Origin commitments and has been rested this week. And Hughes rarely has a bad game with just three scores under 50, five of 70+ and a season high of 108. My issue is that as solid as Hughes is, he’s no Hynes (seven scores of 70+ with three triple figure scores including a season high of 160).

* Latrell Mitchell - The Rabbitohs may be travelling poorly but Mitchell is still scoring well and he has a 3RA of 87.7PPG since his return from suspension. South Sydney have good bye coverage playing rounds 16 and 19 – though they do miss the tricky round 17. Anyone considering this buy would wait until after Origin though as Mitchell is a strong chance of being the next man called in should injuries hit fullback or centre.

* Brendan Hands - The Parramatta rake was called on to play the full 80 minutes last week and he acquitted himself well scoring 65 points (55 in pure base). His appeal centres entirely on him continuing to play 80 minutes each week which is a bit of a lottery so I’ll be passing on him for now.

* Jacob Preston - Tipped as a good buy last week thanks to an increased role deputising for the injured Viliame Kikau, Preston delivered scoring 109 points with two tries and more than 50 points in base. Still a decent buy but there are some issues. Firstly, the Bulldogs have two byes still to serve and Preston is unavailable for rounds 15 and 19. Secondly when Kikau returns, Preston will need to be sold. Not massively against him, but prefer Fifita and Katoa.

SELL

* Angus Crichton - The most sold player of the week and I can see why. The Roosters run deep at 2RF and you’d have to think there’s a fair chance Crichton is either rested post-Origin or (more likely) plays a reduced role off the bench. Trade him now and hope you can buy him back once the Origin shenanigans are over at a reduced price.

* Morgan Smithies - On the bye and leaking cash, has to go.

* Joey Lussick - Dropped in favour of Hands – has to go.

* Sam Hughes - Leaking cash, sell.

EEL OUT FOR SEASON

Parramatta outside back Bailey Simonsson has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

The Eels confirmed on Tuesday that Simonsson will have reconstructive surgery on a torn ACL.

It means Blaize Talagi returns to the starting in place of Simonsson for the Eels clash against Canterbury on Monday.

MANLY’S ARTHUR BLOW

Manly have suffered another setback on the injury front after half Jake Arthur suffered a stress fracture in his foot that is expected to sideline him for up to three months.

The injury blow comes at the worst possible time for Manly and Arthur given he would have provided cover for Daly Cherry-Evans during the State of Origin period.

Cherry-Evans, the captain of the Queensland team, is expected to be rested at some stage over the Origin period as Manly look to ensure their skipper is fit and firing for the run in to the finals.

That would have opened the door for Arthur to get an opportunity but he is now set to be sidelined for the Origin period.

DOUBLE BLOW FOR BUNNIES

South Sydney’s injury woes continue with Jacob Host and Izaac Tu’itupou Thompson set to be sidelined for at least a month.

Host and Thompson join South Sydney’s growing injury list. Richie Kennar will return to the starting line-up.
