KFC NRL SuperCoach 2022 Round 2 wrap: High, lows and trade targets

Tipped to struggle, this SuperCoach star raised his bat and there look like plenty more points to come. The Round 2 stats you need to know when trading.

KFC SuperCoach: Buy, Hold, Sell, Round 3

Harry Grant had 8% of teams on board even though he didn’t play Round 1. 5% shuffled him in for the injured Brandon Smith, myself included. When he picked up the kicking tee after setting up Xavier Coates for the opening try the other 87% started calculating the trade boost to get him in.

Sure the goals didn’t go over, but he struck them pretty sweetly from the sideline and it showed he’s got plenty more SuperCoach points in him than we first thought, which was already a lot (92 this round). He pumped out 60 in base stats before adding any of the other attacking stats we can expect as part of the Melbourne setup.

The other big winner of the round was Nicholas Hynes, 101, who many expected would struggle after leaving the Storm but it sure hasn’t been a bother for him in the opening two rounds. He notched his first century of the season after having five centuries in 2021.

The rounds other centuries belong to a couple SuperCoach favourites Nat Butcher, 114, at the Roosters and Greg Marzhew, 102, at the Titans, along with Bulldogs hooker Jeremy Marshall-King.

With the celebrating out of the way, now it’s time for tough decisions. Tom Trbojevic sure hasn’t done the job so far but with a sweet run through until the Storm in Round 12 do you hold the man with a 100+ scores against all his upcoming opponents and a 104PPG career record against the Bulldogs?

There’s no better prospect for points than his match-ups ahead but there are sure plenty of ways to put your salary cap to use if the 300 breakeven makes you want to jump off.

Similarly Cody Walker is staring down a 195 breakeven coming off a near career worst game.

He’s had 200 against the Roosters in the past, but with a Panthers matchup looming as well the following round, I think I’m saying farewell for now and coming back to Walker at a cheaper price later in the season when the Rabbitohs show some form.

Here are the players of the week and scroll on down for my breakdown of each game’s highs, lows and players to watch.

Storm 15-14 Rabbitohs

Highs: Harry Grant, 92, had 59 in base stats, two try assists and a linebreak. Jaxson Paulo, 81, was switched from the left to the right side of the Rabbitohs attack for the last quarter of the game as he and Cody Walker struggled on the left, but you wouldn’t know it from his SuperCoach scores. He had a try, two linebreaks, five tackle busts and 38 in base stats. Campbell Graham, 78, had 40 points in base stats, eight tackle busts, a try and a linebreak. One of the best for base in this position over the past couple seasons. Cameron Murray, 76, started from the bench giving owners a scare but he came on after 12 minutes and had 59 in base stats, 12 points from offloads and a linebreak assists. Cameron Munster, 74, was impressive in his first game of the season with 37 in base stats, three offloads, six tackle busts, a try and a linebreak. He did miss eight tackles and give away two penalties.

Lows: The Rabbitohs halves are struggling, Cody Walker, 17, had four errors. His price is set to come crashing down. Lachlan Ilias, 17, had two try contributions but only made eight tackles and four runs. Justin Olam, 25, and Tepai Moeroa, 22, were both sin binned.

Watchlist: Latrell Mitchell, 71, was at the heart of everything that did work for the Rabbitohs with two try assists, three linebreak assists, a two-point field goal. The downside though was he missed all three shots at goal and only had seven hit-ups. Xavier Coates, 60, had a try, linebreak and try assist. Jesse Bromwich, 59, had 53 in base stats and a couple offloads in 63 minutes. Josh King, 51, had 60 in base stats in 67 minutes on the field with three penalties conceded and a few missed tackles keeping his score down. Damien Cook, 46, left the field with 11 minutes to go and the game on the line.

Dragons 16-20 Panthers

Highs: Viliame Kikau, 87, scored two tries, had a linebreak, two offloads, three tackle busts and 37 in base stats in 72 minutes. An impressive follow to last week’s 87 and he could have gone higher if not for the three penalties and three errors conceded. Ben Hunt, 75, ticked off stats in a lot of categories with one try assist, eight tackle busts, a couple offloads, a 40/20 and a linebreak assists. Apisai Koroisau, 71, played the full 80 minutes with hooker backup Mitch Kenny having to plug other gaps due to injuries, and delivered 50 in base stats, a try assists and a linebreak assist. Isaah Yeo, 64, played the full 80 minutes again and was all base apart from four tackle busts. He looks a very steady option.

Lows: Brian To’o, 21, went off injured early in the second half and James Fisher Harris, 25, played just 25 minutes picking up a shoulder injury. They’ll both come at a nice discount later in the season with those scores in their averages. Tyrell Sloan, 26, had a try and still scored low with just 15 in base stats.

Watchlist: Spencer Leniu, 61, crashed over for a try but only saw a small uptick in his minutes with the injuries to the Panthers. Izaack Tago, 56, had 44 in base stats, five tackle busts and a linebreak. Play him every week and if you don’t have him make it happen this week. Liam Martin, 35, played the second half in the centres with To’o’s injury forcing a reshuffle. Moses Suli, 55, had 37 in base stats, a couple offloads and a linebreak assist. The Dragons are feeding him plenty of ball. Zac Lomax, 50, had a try, linebreak, 39 in base stats, 2/3 goals, but was also sin-binned and made 6 errors, hitting him for -20.

Roosters 26-12 Sea Eagles

Highs: Nat Butcher, 114, had two tries, two linebreaks, four tackle busts and two offloads on top of 46 in base stats in 62 minutes. Sitili Tupouniua, 86, played just 46 minutes before failing a HIA. In that time he had three linebreaks, a try and six tackle busts. James Tedesco, 84, bounced back after a round 1 32 and while he wasn’t in the thick of the attacking points the SuperCoach points still ticked over. He had one try assist, 18 points from forced drop outs, three offloads, and 31 in base stats. Connor Watson, 77, shared the hooker duties with Drew Hutchison playing just 43 minutes before picking up a shoulder injury. He was very busy in that time with 38 in base stats, five tackle busts, two linebreak assists and a try assist. Haumole Olakau’atu, 77, made the most of lining up against Sam Walker, swatting him away for the bulk of his 12 tackle busts while producing 54 in base stats.

Lows: Ethan Bullemor, 20, played just 32 minutes being replaced by Andrew Davey, 22, who played just 29 minutes. A big worry for Bullemor owners. Roosters centres and SuperCoach, we’ve said it before and here it is again Joseph Manu, 29, Paul Momirovski, 22, missing out on the points. Manly pairing Brad Parker, 26, Morgan Harper, 25 also struggled.

Watchlist: Sio Siua Taukeiaho, 69, played 63 minutes and had 39 points from hit-ups. Sam Walker, 59, had 8 missed tackles. Billy Smith, 32, had 19 hit-ups and played on the right wing. If he can hold the position he’s up for some bigger scores soon. Angus Crichton, 45, has switched to the right side this year and hasn’t had a big impact yet.

Titans 20-18 Warriors

Highs: Greg Marzhew, 102, had two tries and two linebreaks along with 11 tackle busts and 28 points from hit-ups. If we had any certainty about his time in the team he’d be worth picking up but Corey Thompson waiting to return from a hand injury. Wade Egan, 80, had a try, two linebreaks and five tackle busts in 59 minutes. Beau Fermor, 77, had 43 in base stats, a try, linebreak and four tackle busts. Reece Walsh, 76, was very busy in his first game of the season, with a try assists, 3/3 goals, four tackle busts, two forced dropouts and a linebreak assists. Alexander Brimson, 71, also impressed in his first outing of the season and making the switch to five-eighth for the Titans. He had two try assists and a linebreak.

Lows: Matthew Lodge, 20, played just 20 minutes. Will Smith, 26, and Erin Clark, 28, showed why you don’t chase after Round 1 points.

Watchlist: Toby Sexton, 53, produced another solid score without any of the major attacking categories. David Fifita, 54, had just 33 in base stats and only 8 hit-ups in his 65 minutes. Phillip Sami, 59, followed up his double in Round 1 with another try and linebreak. Josh Curran, 63, was pretty much all base stats following on from last week’s 81. Addin Fonua-Blake, 62, saw his minutes drop back down to 52 this week and had 44 in base stats with a linebreak.

Sharks 18-16 Eels

Highs: Nicholas Hynes, 101, had 40 in base stats, a try assist, two try contributions, five tackle busts, three offloads and three linebreak assists and has been one of the most impressive players of the opening rounds. William Kennedy, 87, impressed with his passing game, setting up two tries and having four linebreak assists. Clint Gutherson, 81, had a try assist, linebreak and kicked 4/4 goals. Sione Katoa, 80, had a try, two linebreaks and seven tackle busts. Teig Wilton, 77, scored a try for the second week in a row but will likely miss the next round after a late tackle on Mitchell Moses. Blayke Brailey, 71, had 52 in base stats and a linebreak following on from 73 last week.

Lows: Cameron McInnes, 18, played just 25 minutes in his first game with the Sharks. His price should come down nicely as he’s eased back after missing all of last season.

Watchlist: Dylan Brown, 68, had 43 in base stats, a linebreak and five tackle busts. Isaiah Papali’i, 65, had 62 in base stats and four tackle busts, but also missed seven tackles. Dale Finucane, 60, was all base in 64 minutes. Another safe solid point scorer. Will Penisini, 49, had 42 in base stats and five tackle busts. Get him this week if you don’t have him already.

Cowboys 26-6 Raiders

Highs: Peta Hiku, 76, had 39 in base stats, a try assist, intercept, three offloads and a sprinkling of other stats. He’s highly involved and posted 62 last week. Two big scores both without a try. Corey Harawira-Naera, 69, had a try, linebreak and five tackle busts after a 67 score last week. You’d probably want to see him playing 80 minutes though rather than the 57 he’s had in the opening rounds. Murray Taulagi, 69, had a try, linebreak, four tackle busts, two offloads and two linebreak assists.

Lows: James Schiller, 6, went off for a HIA early in the game but then never got involved. Mitchell Dunn, 6, injured his knee and is out for the season. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, 11, had just eight runs for the game. Heilum Luki, 13, played just 23 minutes. Raiders centres Semi Valemei, 15, and Matthew Timoko, 18, struggled too. Hudson Young, 26, was sin-binned.

Watchlist: Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, 60, scored a try, had a linebreak and four tackle busts. Thomas Dearden, 59, is the third best 5/8 after two rounds. Jason Taumalolo, 56, played 53 minutes and had 51 in base stats and a few tackle busts. Jack Wighton, 56, had nine tackle busts and 40/20. Jeremiah Nanai, 35, scored a try but also missed 11 tackles, made three errors and conceded a penalty for -19. Tom Gilbert, 34, had the same minutes as Round 1, but his output was drastically lower. Just 40 in base compared to 65 the week before. Yet another awkwardly priced Cowboy... Coen Hess, 51, was all base in 57 minutes.

Knights 26-4 Tigers

Highs: Dane Gagai, 82, had a try, linebreak, eight tackle busts and 38 in base stats. The Panthers up next will be a good test for the Knights players who’ve started fast. Tyson Frizell, 80, had 55 in base stats, three tackle busts and scored a try, following on from 77 last week. Luciano Leilua, 73, was one of the only bright spots for the Tigers with 57 in base stats and a couple offloads and tackle busts. Jake Clifford, 70, has been the best 5/8 over the opening rounds. He had a try, try assist, 3/6 goals alinebreak assist and a kick and regather. That leaves just 21 in base.

Lows: Tyrone Peachey, 14, was sin-binned and picked up more negative points than positive in his 57 minutes. David Nofoaluma, 24, went off in the first half for a HIA. Kelma Tuilagi, 32, failed a HIA after 51 minutes. Kurt Mann, 30, is playing good rugby league but it’s not translating to SuperCoach points. Stefano Utoikamanu, 29, dropped a ball over the line otherwise would have doubled his score in one play. Lachlan Fitzgibbon, 30, injured his knee in the first half.

Watchlist: Two Knights cheapie forwards impressed with Leo Thompson, 45, playing 38 minutes and had 38 in base stats with two offloads and two tackle busts. Matt Croker, 48, had 45 in base stats in just 33 minutes. Mitchell Barnett, 41, likely gets 80 minutes on the left edge with Fitzgibbon injured. Dominic Young, 56, scored a try for the second week in a row and could make some fast cash. Adam Clune, 58, had two try assists and two forced drop outs. Another potential moneymaker from the Knights following on from 49 in Round 1.

Bulldogs 10-16 Broncos

Highs: Jeremy Marshall-King, 100, had 45 in base stats, a try, two linebreaks, two offloads and three tackle busts in 61 minutes. Herbie Farnworth, 84, scored two tries, had four tackle busts a linebreak and made 17 hit-ups for 30 points. Braidon Burns, 79, has started the season showing the form which had him on the radar of SuperCoaches a couple seasons ago. He had a try, two linebreaks, 33 in base stats and five tackle busts after a 60 in Round 1.

Lows: The Broncos right edge didn’t have much ball or go looking for it either. Selwyn Cobbo, 20, had nine hit-ups, while Kotoni Staggs, 32, had just six. That said Staggs dropped a ball over the line and should have scored 60+

Watchlist: Corey Oates, 69, scored a try for the second week in a row and is getting his hands much dirtier than those on the other side of the field with 34 points from 19 hit-ups. Matt Burton, 69, notched points in a heap of categories with his kicking and running game both impressing. He had five tackle busts, two forced drop outs, two offloads, twovlinebreak assists and 30 in base stats. Max King, 51, is looking like one of the best cheapies with 36 in base stats, three offloads and a couple tackle busts following on from 55 in Round 1. Tevita Pangai Jr, 68, had a whopping 26 points from offloads. Those helped him outscore Payne Haas, 67, who reverted back to 60 minutes. Pangai’s track record at the judiciary turned plenty of people off before Round 1 but he has to be worth a look now with a clean slate for all players this season. The same can be said for Jack Hetherington, 56, playing 80 minutes on the edge.
